I learned something very interesting over the weekend. Did you know that when you flush medications down the sink or toilet you are poisoning the water system? Interesting fact ...Sewage treatment plants are not currently designed to remove pharmaceuticals from water. Nor are the facilities that treat water to make it drinkable. As an after effect, a certain amount of contamination is removed when water is treated for other purposes. When disposing of medications keep these tips in mind: 1) limit bulk purchases 2) use drug take back programs and 3) be careful when throwing in the trash to remove them from packaging, crush them and seal in a plastic bag with water. Great to add sawdust, cat litter, coffee grounds or some other unappealing matter to the bag to cut the down the chances of a child or animal eating the contents 4) do not flush unused medications or pour them down the drain.
