Why do you think that US teens are driving less than in previous years? It is an interesting phenomenon that is further complicated by the following:
1- Virtual contact reduces the need for human interaction. From a social aspect, the internet has replaced so many real life sharing friendships. Since we can do everything from shopping for products to purchasing a mortgage online there is a growing group of young people who do not feel the motivation to get their license.
2- High unemployment rate has impacted teens either from a family or personal circumstance. The cost of a vehicle, maintenance, gas and insurance is extremely expensive especially if they have no job.
3- Lastly, the article points to a packed schedule and just being too busy. Some people make note that they can arrange other transportation or selecting a more environmentally friendly approach (carpool or public transport).
